About me
It’s a beautiful, complicated and endlessly interesting world out there. And I believe travelling enriches us in a way that not many other things do. When you’re in an unfamiliar place, you are open, exposed even, and you see things afresh, including yourself. That openness and the perspective altering power of travel is a gift for a writer.
In particular, I love places where culture and environment are entwined – where people make places, which in turn shape the way they live and interact. That’s why I love places like Venice and Marrakech, both fervid petri dishes of change and creativity, offering experiences that are challenging, thought-provoking and rewarding. As the world population grows towards 10 billion and the climate crisis becomes more acute, I think it is vital to tell stories at this intersection and shine a spotlight on projects where people are crafting new – and reviving old – ways of living more sustainably and harmoniously.
I now work on editorial and writing projects for a variety of clients, and contribute articles to a diverse range of publications. These include the Telegraph, Guardian, New York Times, Conde Nast Traveller, Time Out, the Independent, Wanderlust, Culture Trip, L’Italo Americano and BBC Travel among others.
Other projects include the creation and presentation of The Cave of Swimmers for BBC Radio 4’s Tales from the Back of Beyond series in 2000. This work led to the writing of 224-page illustrated book: Libya: A Cultural History, a singular achievement given that foreign journalists were prohibited from working in Libya at the time.
