lonely planet guides

I have been researching and writing Lonely Planet guidebooks since 1999 and I have written over 40 guides. In particular, I specialise in guides to African, Middle Eastern and Italian destinations. In 2023, I researched Seychelles for the Mauritius, Reunion & Seychelles guide and the southern Nile Valley for chapters in the Egypt guide. And, so far, this year (2024) I’ve just returned from Venice researching for a new pocket guidebook that will be published later in the year. I also have research scheduled in Tunisia and Algeria for the Africa guide.

From 2004-2010 I was the Commissioning Editor of Lonely Planet’s Italian series, managing a team of 20 writers across 14 guidebooks with a budget of US$11 million. Over the years, I have worked on most of the guides in the series, including multiple editions of the Italy guide, Milan, the Italian Lakes, Venice & the Veneto, Rome, Florence & Tuscany, Puglia & Basilicata, Sardinia and Sicily. I continue to contribute to these best-selling titles, most recently authoring Pocket Venice and Pocket Florence & Tuscany.

Milan & the italian lakes

I was the sole author of Lonely Planet’s guide to Milan for the best part of a decade and I wrote the first edition (and multiple updates) of the Italian Lakes. In addition, I contributed essays covering topics such as history, food, art and gardens.

italy

I have contributed to Lonely Planet’s flagship Italian guide since 2001. Most recently, in 2022, I completely updated the chapters on the southern regions of Basilicata and Calabria, one of Italy’s least well-known and most adventurous corners.

venice & the veneto

I have been the lead author on Lonely Planet’s guide to Venice & the Veneto since 2012. During that period, I have researched every corner of the city and region and have contributed essays on the changing lagoon environment and current affairs.
